Important
If you are new to the Yoga classes, please
read the
precautions. In a large class, it is not possible to pay
individual attention. You should always seek the instructor’s
advice before practicing. Drop an email before the class or come
in early to discuss.
Yoga and change
So you are all settled down, your routine is
well established. You take time daily to do some spiritual
activities. You pray to God that this constancy carries on so
that you can always be happy as you are.
Suddenly, say, your spouse decides to change
his job. After living with him for 15 years you would think he
would have told you well before! Welcome to reality. Your
routine is now all changed! You need to take care of extra
tasks, those that he would normally do. At the same time your
work load is increasing and you see opportunities for more
success. A change in routine is the last thing that you want to
happen. Within a few days you are all worked up, you are almost
angry at your spouse and at yourself for getting into all this.
Your frustration is not only back, but also increasing.
This is certainly a point where you need to
go back to your Yoga practice. What does yoga teach you as a
foremost lesion? Detachment or non-attachment. A Yogi is never
attached to anything – even to happiness. Happiness is a result
of what your are doing and not an end-goal in itself. Because
when you consider happiness as a goal, what would you do after
you achieve it? It is not a state where you want to end your
journey. Happiness is a point where things or the spirit starts
to flow out of you.
So the challenge is to strive to stay happy.
What could you do? Welcome change for one. Nothing is more
constant than change – as the popular saying goes. So learn to
deal with change. If an approach does not work, don’t get hung
up with trying to make the approach succeed. Think of
alternatives. You will find that using an alternative will not
only save you time in solving the problem, but it will also keep
you happy. When you get attached to a thing or an approach, you
are stuck in the muck. To paraphrase Yoda from the movie ‘Star
Wars’, Despair leads to frustration, frustration leads to anger
and anger leads to hatred.
When you feel stuck, all it needs is to take
a step back and breathe well for some time. Get back into the
meditative mood. It helps to practice meditation daily for this
matter, not just when you need it. Such constant practice helps
you stay ahead and keep yourself detached and ultimately always
happy.
Yoga at
Plymouth Balvihar
There is a special yoga class this Sunday at 2 PM for those who
want a much gentler session due to physical limitations or age.
We will practice a lot of breathing and meditation. Bring a
friend of yours who you will think will benefit. You would be
doing a service to him or her. |
|
PS: If you have any medical conditions, it is
best to consult your doctor and your instructor personally to
discuss what is appropriate for you. Personal one on one
session(s) and not group classes may be necessary to determine
what is right given your specific conditions, as the right
prescription requires constant feedback, monitoring and
corrections. Please ask your instructor for basic
precautions
before attending a Yoga class.

Being in touch
"There is guidance for each of us, and by lowly listening, we
shall hear the right word. Certainly there is a right for you
that needs no choice on your part. Place yourself in the middle
of the stream of power and wisdom which flows into your life.
Then, without effort, you are impelled to truth and to perfect
contentment."
(Ralph Waldo Emerson)
I don’t think Emerson was talking about yoga
when he said this. He didn’t have to. For Yoga is not something
specific to a religion or to a country. And there is no one way
of Yoga.
‘There is guidance for each of us, and by
lowly listening we shall hear the right word’. Emerson is saying
that each one of us is born here for a purpose and that purpose
is our right. By lowly listening he means, in yogic terms,
meditation. By trying to attain that absolute calm, one can
truly connect with one’s Self. Then you will hear what is spoken
through your Self. It flows out of you effortlessly. To
paraphrase Dr. Wayne Dyer ‘When you are inspired, i.e., in
Spirit, the source energy flows out of you effortlessly’.
‘Certainly there is a right for you that
needs no choice on your part’. You don’t have to struggle to
find out what is that you need to do in a given moment or in
your life’s time. You don’t have to make a choice. Your purpose
is there within your Self. The trick is to find out what it is.
How do you do that? First of all, give up the attitude of ‘I do
the most, I get the most’. It is not about getting. Once you let
go of the ‘getting’ part, you have opened up many, many blocked
energy channels within yourself. Then the energy starts flowing.
Then you are letting yourself be in the steam of power and
wisdom that flows in your life as Emerson said.
Many people get carried away when asked what
is your purpose in life? For one, it need not becoming a CEO or
a manager with hundreds of reports. That would be your ego
speaking. If you study the lives of many successful people you
will find they are happy in what they are doing. When I say
successful people, think Mahatma Gandhi, not Kenneth Lay. Think
Warren Buffet, not someone with those fleets of Ferraris.
Success comes out of happiness. Pursue happiness and success and
more importantly, your purpose in life will stand out for
yourself.
Yoga at
Plymouth Balvihar
The special yoga class last week was enjoyed by all those who
attended. The attendance can be better. I am sure, you will have
parents and friends who can benefit from such a class. For the
time being, these classes are free and at a later time there
would a nominal fee. In other words, fee won’t be a deterrent.
So please attempt to make it to the class. We will have another
of these classes very soon. |
