“Good
health results from perfect communication between each part
of the body and mind, and when each cell communes with every
other. Although yoga is essentially a spiritual science, it
leads to a sense of physical and emotional well-being”
B.K.S. Iyengar in
‘YOGA’

Freedom from greed
The fifth yama is Aparigraha (ah-paari-gra-ha).
Parigraha means possessiveness or covetousness. The
adding of an ‘a’ to a Sanskrit words usually denotes the
opposite. Thus the fifth yama or restraint means freedom
from possessiveness or hoarding; not desiring more than what
we need. On a subtler note, it is more about attachment. You
can free yourself from attachment to material things, but
can you do the same emotionally. Someone trying to control
another is an example of unwanted emotional attachment.
Aparigraha also denotes freedom from greed.
When you see a person with enormous wealth, it may not be an
example of greed. But a person wanting to live a lifestyle
beyond one’s means is a great example. If you have growing
children, it is important to take some time to explain to
them what is greed and what is not.
The spirit of love
You will find as you look back on your life that the moments
when you have truly lived are the moments when you have done
things in the spirit of love – Henry Drummond in his book
‘The greatest thing in the world’..
True love comes about when you realize the
Self. The Self in one is the same Self in any other. That
Self is the essence of a human being. When we move away from
being self-centric to being Self-centric (note the change of
case), you are maturing into the human being that you were
meant to be. This process of realization happens when you
spend time understanding what is the Self, how to realize
it, etc. Yoga practice is a great way for such
introspection. Of the seven days a week and of its168
hours (wow, that’s a lot of time), how many hours do you
spend in realizing your Self?

“In
the text it says that Yoga is a connection of knowledge that
removes impurities and ignorance. My answer was wrong, but I
learned that Yoga does maybe help lungs, spine and heart but
focuses mostly on removing bad qualities – Roshan Patel,
Culture 4 student, Plymouth Balvihar”

question ‘What is the difference between your understanding
of the term Yoga with that defined in the books’

The Chakras
The literal meaning of the word Chakra is
‘wheel’ or ‘circle’, but in yogic context a better
translation of the Sanskrit word is ‘vortex’ or ‘whirlpool’.
The chakras are vortices of psychic energy and they are
visualized and experienced as circular movements of energy (Kundalini
Tantra, Swami Satyananda Sawaswati).
The Chakras are various in the human body
but there are seven main chakras. Each of the chakra has a
color, an element (air, water, etc), shape, quality, sound
associated with it. Each Chakra has a quality associated
with it. For example, the heart chakra – Anahata (ana-hatha)
– denotes good feelings such as love and compassion. If you
feel ‘dry’ or cold any time, it is time to open up this
chakra. Certain asanas do this very thing – try the
‘Windmill’ for example. So also Chakra breathing. With
continuous practice of Heart chakra breathing you will
recollect what it is to be loving and be loved.
But walk on..
Under the sword raised high
Is hell making you tremble
But walk on…
And there is the land of bliss.
So goes the beautiful Zen quotation. So if
you are going through a tough time, hang in there. To see
the light, you also need to know what darkness is so that
you know that you don’t want to go back to darkness. Hope
sheds light on the darkness.

This weekend, it is Balvihar Annual Day, but
don’t let that keep you from practicing Yoga. Yoga practice
is a need much like food. The more you realize that and
practice, the better you will feel! |
